Saschiz Fortified Church: 500 Years of History in Transylvania

Saschiz

Saschiz Fortified Church is included in most of our tours in Transylvania.

Part of the UNESCO Sites of Romania, this imposing fortified church is one of the most beautiful in Transylvania. It’s a great example of how locals incorporated defensive elements in a religious monument, a common practice in the region centuries ago. As the borders of Transylvania were under constant threat, villagers hid in churches that became real fortresses prepared to withstand long sieges.

The story starts half a millennium ago

Just half an hour from Sighisoara, Saschiz was first mentioned in 1309. Its main historical attraction, the fortified church dedicated to Saint Stephen, dates from the 15th century.

The defensive tower of the fortified church

Planned from the very beginning as a defensive outpost, the Saschiz fortified church is one of the strongest in Transylvania. This Late-Gothic landmark has 22 buttresses, a wall walk, and an extra floor built above the nave and the choir, with rows of machicolations and loopholes. Beautiful Baroque elements ornate its interiors, while a shiny bell tower softens its massive outlook.

Visiting the church is only one of the many things you can do in Saschiz. Explore local traditions like beekeeping, learn how to bake bread, enjoy a horse cart ride, and enjoy the panoramic view from the 14th-century hilltop fortress.
